Just recently the controversy over legalizing homosexuality took an ugly turn when the home ministry called gay sex as ‘immoral’ and tagged it as an act that is ‘against social order’. The whole of Bollywood has woken up to the issue and has prominently voiced their opinion against it. From big stars to filmmakers everyone is expressing their displeasure on the discrimination of homosexuals by the authorities.
“Any form of ‘Discrimination’ is intolerable and hence the statement against homosexuals is unjust. Being ‘Gay’ is not a disease we need to fear. It's ridiculous that there are people trying to stop it from spreading,” said Hrithik Roshan. Filmmaker Onir who has made films on homosexuality was of the similar opinion as well, “It’s a shame that the government does not have the integrity to stand up for the fundamental rights of the queer community. Such an aggressive stand against the homosexuals would rather encourage the so called moral police to promote hatred and intolerance,” added Onir.
Actor Arif Zakaria expressed that Home ministry’s stand would be good for politics but not society, “The home ministry’s bill may be a small step for good ‘politics’ but it’s a giant step back for a progressive society.”
With Industry biggies taking a stand against the ministry it remains to be seen how far and how soon they are able to make a difference.
