Colin Firth: I needed pressure to play King

8th January 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Colin Firth was glad to be thrown in at the deep end on his first day shooting The Kings Speech.

The British actor portrays the lead role in the critically acclaimed movie, which documents the true story of Britains King George VI battle to overcome a stutter upon his impromptu ascension to the throne.

Colin thinks the movies director Tom Hoopers idea to dive right into shooting was an excellent idea, as it helped encapsulate the tense and nervous way his character would have been feeling upon becoming King.

I needed a camera on me, particularly with a character who has all these blocks, all this anger and despair, he explained. I cant go all the way there sitting in my T-shirt in rehearsal in the Covent Garden Hotel with chocolate biscuits in front of me.

Colin is immensely proud of the film, which is tipped to do very well in the upcoming awards season, and admits the first scene he filmed was especially gruelling. The take lasted ten minutes and pushed Colins acting abilities to the limit.

Tom not only kicked off with a major scene, he came in for a very serious, unforgiving mid-shot for the entire ten-minute take, the actor told Empire. (C) Cover Media
