Cynthia Nixon: Don't pigeon-hole me

31st January 2012

Cynthia Nixon thinks being "pigeon-holed" by her sexuality is "uninclusive and disempowering".

The Sex and the City star recently came under fire from gay rights groups for claiming that homosexuality was a "choice".

But she has now given a statement to The Advocate where she further explains her comments and maintains that her decision to be in a homosexual relationship was a choice but her bisexuality is not.

"My recent comments in The New York Times were about me and my personal story of being gay," she said.

"I believe we all have different ways we came to the gay community and we can't and shouldn't be pigeon-holed into one cultural narrative which can be uninclusive and disempowering.

"However, to the extent that anyone wishes to interpret my words in a strictly legal context I would like to clarify: While I don't often use the word, the technically precise term for my orientation is bisexual.

"I believe bisexuality is not a choice, it is a fact. What I have chosen' is to be in a gay relationship."

Cynthia went on to say that she looked forward to the day when everyone is recognised as "full and equal citizens".
