Damon Albarn smarting over number two record

25th October 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Damon Albarn was gutted when Boyzone beat Gorillaz to the UK number one album spot earlier this year.

Damon found success as the lead singer of band Blur in the 1990s, and went on to create the Gorillaz in 1998. Damon writes the music for the group, which is fronted by four animated characters created by illustrator Jamie Hewlett.

Gorillaz released their third studio album, Plastic Beach, on March 3rd and watched as it charted second in Britain and America, a result that failed to please the 42-year-old musician.

I was a bit f**king gutted that Plastic Beach only got to two in America. And I was obviously a bit gutted that it only got to two in England. Against f**king Boyzone! But at the end of the day its OK. Ive had a lot of successful number twos over the years, the singer said.

Gorillaz made headlines earlier this year when they agreed to stand in for U2 at the annual British festival Glastonbury, after Bono injured his back and was unable to perform.

Damon headlined the event the previous year with Blur, but Gorillaz did not go down as well. Damon brought along a few guests, including Snoop Dogg, Bobby Womack and The Falls singer Mark E Smith, who all failed to quell the crowd, and he wasnt surprised at the reaction.

I hear U2 were really looking forward to it. They even wrote a special song... Oh of course that was part of the reason. I knew thered be a lot of p**sed off people. Mark E Smith is... Well, hes not Bono, is he? Damon told Q magazine. (C) Cover Media
