Gerard Butler has "returned home and is in good health" following his visit to rehab.

The 42-year-old Scottish actor entered the Betty Ford Clinic in California three weeks ago.

It has been claimed the star decided to seek professional help after developing a problem with prescription medication.

Gerard has reportedly been released and has returned to vigour.

"Gerard has completed a successful course of treatment and has returned home in good health," Gerard's representative Rupert Fowler told Radar Online. "We will not be making any further comment at this time."

Gerard is not thought to be addicted to pain medication, but was reportedly worried things might escalate if he didn't take steps to stop using the pills.

Gerard has previously hinted he had a problem with alcohol. He used to drink a lot but now doesn't partake in any such beverages.

"I used to drink until I couldn't remember anything. I was just mad for it and on a death wish. It was madness," he told The Red Bulletin publication.

"One or two drinks was never enough for me. I was a foot-on-the-floor-all-the-way drinker, so it had to go. I don't miss it."
