(Cover) - EN Showbiz - James Van Der Beeks wife has given birth to a girl.

The actor is best known for his role as Dawson Leery in the 90s teen drama Dawson's Creek.

The 33-year-old star announced his then-girlfriend Kimberly Brook who he married in August - was pregnant with their first child on his Twitter page in April, and the star turned to the mini-blogging site again late last night to tell his followers the baby had been born. Twitter only allows members to write messages of a maximum of 140 characters at a time, but the actor joked that wasnt a problem as he was more or less speechless.

"Had the blessing of becoming a father over the weekend... Couldn't come close to describing this bliss even if I had 140 million characters," wrote the star on his Twitter page.

The little girl was born on Saturday and is called Olivia. James was quick to add he may end up making people cringe with his gushing tweets, insisting he cant help praising his beautiful new daughter.

"I apologise in advance for any obnoxiously precious new-dad tweets that may follow," wrote the proud father. "I'm under her spell..."

He also teased he plans to introduce her to the sounds of the National Football League games now, in order for her to appreciate American football when shes older.

"If I watch football w/ my daughter now, she'll like the sounds of the NFL & want to watch it w/ me when she's older (sic)," laughed the star. (C) Cover Media
