John Cleese: London doesn't feel English

2nd September 2011

(Cover) - US Showbiz - John Cleese does not believe that London is "an English city" any longer.

The 71-year-old actor thinks the modern cosmopolitan city has changed drastically since his Monty Python days in the 1970s. In the wake of London's riots in August, John feels that he can no longer define the town.

"I'm not sure what's going on in Britain. Or, let me say this: I don't know what's going on in London because London is no longer an English city," John declared to ABC Australia. "That's how they got the Olympics, they said, 'We're the most cosmopolitan city on Earth'. But it doesn't feel English."

There are many facets to why John does not believe the city feels English anymore. Multiculturalism, in John's opinion, is the main contributor to the city's current vibe.

"I had a Californian friend come over two months ago, walk down the King's Road and said to me, 'Well, where are all the English people?'" John said. "I love having different cultures around but when the parent culture kind of dissipates you are left thinking, 'Well, what's going on?'"

John's remarks sparked a great deal of controversy. Many turned to Twitter to express their sentiments.

"You and your friend probably did see a lot of English people, John Cleese, it's just that they might not all have been white (sic)," Ben Naylor fumed.

Another Twitter user, called bat020, wrote: "London never has been and never will be 'English' in the sense John Cleese would like it to be, thank goodness (sic)."

John currently resides in the United States. (C) Cover Media
