Katie Holmes appeared "relaxed" when spotted with a mystery man over the weekend.

The actress is single following her recent divorce from Tom Cruise.

Over the weekend, Katie stepped out with a dark haired man in New York City. She eschewed bodyguards for the day and seemed entirely comfortable with her companion.

"She was smiling, very relaxed," a source told New York Daily News.

Katie and her pal spent time at Broadway show If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal, and also found time to enjoy a coffee at an upmarket hotel.

They were seen laughing as they walked about her neighbourhood, before finishing their day back at her apartment.

Katie seemed keen to keep her plans secret, running for a taxi as soon as she left her home in the early afternoon.

When they returned, the pair opted to use the garage entrance to avoid paparazzi.

On Sunday, Katie spent the day with her brother and her six-year-old daughter Suri.

Yesterday, the star took her daughter for a ride on a carousel in the city. Afterwards, the little girl was adamant she wanted a special treat.

"No, you're allowed to have ice cream right now," Katie was overheard saying.

The actress was previously linked to another man, although he turned out to be the lawyer handling her divorce.
