Rhys Ifans to play Spider-Man villain

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Rhys Ifans is set to play the villain in the new Spider-Man movie.

It was recently announced Emma Stone has landed the role of Gwen Stacy, while Andrew Garfield will play Peter Parker. Now Welsh comic star Rhys has been added to the cast, but details about his role are being kept a closely-guarded secret.

We have been very fortunate to attract some of the best actors working today to play the villains in the Spider-Man movies, and it is exciting to see that trend continue with Rhys Ifans, Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, said in a statement. After seeing his performance in our upcoming film Anonymous, were in awe of his talent and think hes the perfect choice to take on this role.

Rhys shot to fame playing Hugh Grants quirky flatmate in Notting Hill, and was most recently seen playing a drug smuggler in Mr. Nice.

Production is due to begin in just two months and the movie is scheduled to be released in 3D in July 2012.

Marc Webb will be directing the latest instalment of the super hero franchise and he believes 43-year-old Rhys is a perfect choice to play a villain in the film.

What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker, he said. Rhys incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character. (C) Cover Media
