Sarah shot to fame in British pop group Girls Aloud, and started dating Tom three years ago. The pair were on holiday in the Maldives at the time of the engagement, with Tom going down on one knee on New Years Day as the pair relaxed on a secluded beach. The 29-year-old blonde beauty reportedly said yes before texting pals to tell them she was buzzing, reports British newspaper The Sun.

"Sarah is absolutely thrilled. She didn't see it coming at all. When he went down on one knee it came as a huge surprise, explained a source.

"Their relationship has gone from strength to strength since they moved in together. They are inseparable. Tom has shelled out on a big sparkler to let everyone know she's now taken."

Tom, also 29, took to his page on social-networking site Twitter last night to express his joy. The music maestro is beaming with pride at the engagement.

A late happy new year to you all... I feel like the luckiest man in the world!!! (sic), he wrote.

Sarah's spokesman last night confirmed the pair are set to marry, although a date for the nuptials has not yet been set. The singers engagement comes hot on the heels of that of her Girls Aloud bandmate Nadine Coyle. In September Nadine, 25, announced her plans to marry American football star Jason Bell, 32, after he surprised her with a marriage proposal. (C) Cover Media
