(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Tom Jones has lost weight on a meal plan dubbed the Caveman Diet'.

The 71-year-old singer explained that he wanted to drop the pounds after realising he was at least 30lbs overweight.

The Welsh star lost more than 28lbs in five months by following a meal plan featured in US diet book Syndrome X: The Complete Nutritional Program to Prevent and Reverse Insulin Resistance and advice from a nutritionist.

His overhauled eating regime mainly consists of fresh foods including fish, chicken and vegetables, rather than processed carbohydrates such as pasta, pastries and cereals.

"'I was putting too much weight on. I didn't think I was going to and I left the working out for a bit, thought I'd keep a check on it. But with the Christmas puddings and cakes, before I knew it I was 230lb which was 30lb more than I should be. I couldn't get into my suits. That's when I thought, This has got to stop'," he told BBC Radio 2. "It [the diet] tells you to get back to what we used to eat when we were hunters and gatherers. Eat anything that's natural meat, fish, veg."

Tom added that he cut out alcohol for two months to aide his weight loss.

The Sex Bomb singer admitted he enjoys a tipple with his evening meal and even tried to conceal the amount of alcohol he used to consume from his nutritionist.

"The dietician asked, How much do you drink?'. I told him I like a bottle of red wine with my dinner. To yourself?' he said. What I didn't tell him was I'd started off with a martini, had a cognac and a bottle of champagne too," he laughed. (C) Cover Media
