She has lived the controversial life of a sex siren Silk Smitha on screen in her film "The Dirty Picture" and in her next  release"Kahaani" she plays the troubled pregnant woman who is in search for her missing husband. In past she has played a mother in "Paa", a distressed sister in "No One Killed Jessica" but despite of playing realistic characters in most of her films, she still has the greed for more.

She says that she wants to continue with her experimental streak and wants to do more and more challenging roles, “I hope that I continue to get challenging roles, something that gives me the opportunity to explore myself,” said Vidya.

She recently announced that she is keen to play the role of late politician Indira Gandhi and do a  film which is based on her life. She also said that she is dying to do romantic and comedy films as well. “I've always wanted to play Indira Gandhi. I am also dying to do a comedy or a full-blown romantic film,” stated Vidya.
