(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Willie Garson insists criticism of Sex and the City is unfair as it's "only ever" been about love.

The actor portrayed Stanford Blatch in the TV show and two subsequent movies. Stanford is the gay best friend of Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker.

The second big screen adaptation was released last year and was widely panned by critics. Willie insists the criticism was unjustified as at its heart Sex and the City is purely about friendship and fun.

"I was pleased with the second film, it was fun," he told Grazia. "I was upset by the criticism, I felt they were gunning for us a little as they always are. What do they want, for [Kim Cattrall's character] Samantha to find a cure for cancer? It's about love, that's all it's ever been about."

There have been rumours a prequel to the TV show is in the pipeline. There was speculation that Blake Lively might play the young Carrie, something she quickly dismissed.

Willie is glad that isn't happening as he doesn't think the casting would have worked that well.

"I'm not saying [the movie's] not a possibility, but Blake? Doing what? Having sex? Really? OK, whatever!" he added. (C) Cover Media
