Winehouse's father: She detoxed too much

10th September 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Amy Winehouse's father says she "did detox to excess" and believes that is why she died.

The singer passed away in her London home in July aged 27. Although she'd had a public battle with drug addiction no illegal substances were in her body when she died, but she had drunk alcohol.

Her official cause of death won't be known until an inquest is held next month.

Amy's father Mitch Winehouse has spoken about losing his daughter to American talk show host Anderson Cooper. He explained she was trying to stop drinking and believes that is why she died.

"Everything Amy did, she did to excess," he said. "She drank to excess and did detox to excess."

The star's family have previously said they believe she died from a seizure, something Mitch repeated. He thinks it was brought on by Amy quitting alcohol, and fears "there was nobody there to rescue her" when it happened. The star had been suffering from seizures which would make her pass out.

Mitch also revealed prescription drug Librium was in Amy's bloodstream when she passed. It's used to treat anxiety and to ease withdrawal symptoms when coming off alcohol.

"The periods of abstinence were becoming longer, and the periods of drinking were becoming shorter. It was heading in the right direction," Mitch said, adding he wishes Amy had sought professional medical help when quitting alcohol.

Amy's on/off boyfriend Reg Traviss who she is rumoured to have been engaged to was also on the show. He said they'd been planning a trip to St. Lucia to celebrate Amy's 28th birthday, which would have been on September 14. She loved the Caribbean island and it was where she got clean from drugs during an extended stay in 2008.

Reg admitted talking to Amy about her drinking and said she was aware of the situation.

"She was a really clever girl," he said. "She knew what she was doing. I would sometimes choose my moments when there was something that was needed to be said." (C) Cover Media
