January 28, 2011 (Sampurn Wire): In case you do not know what or where is Maleewood, be ready not just to be informed on the talent in this name but also be entertained by it! Maleewood is a throbbing spoof-n-remake industry in the small town Malegaon. And small budget films by professional theatre artists have become an entertainment rage with the crowd of the town. But now, it is none other than Javed Akhtars daughter Zoya who has thought of making a documentary on the superb talent of the small-time-yet-big filmmakers.
Shaikh Nasir, who was instrumental in kicking of this industry with his remake of super-hit Sholay, taking those in lead roles who were lookalikes of the original blockbusters, is the centre of attention for Zoya. Shaikh has shared that Zoya is making a docu on all the works that he has made. And if that was not all, he says that Paul Martin has already filmed a docu on the flourishing Maleewood.
What makes Maleewood unique and interesting as a film subject is also the fact that people here are being treated to locally made films, with local actors, and that the films made here are run not in some hi-fi theatres or big projectors, but in a film parlour. The capacity of the parlour is a small 175 seats, and whatever movie comes on in here, runs houseful for more than several weeks. Sholay, Ghajni, and Superman are some of Maleewoods remakes so far.
