Adele: I thought I was Rihanna

13th April 2011

The award-winning British singer is currently releasing material from her second album 21, the follow-up to her hit debut 19. The record has received critical acclaim as well as proving to be a huge chart success in countries across Europe and Australia.

Adele who was inspired to write the album after the end of a relationship says that despite her own success, she admires other artists for the way their songs make her feel, in particular Rihannas hit featuring Drake, Whats My Name?

''Over New Year's and Christmas, I had time off and I went to all my friends' parties singing it. Doing the dance moves, I was convinced I was Rihanna, she told Entertainment Weekly. She was possessing me with that song, I swear.''

The 22-year-old star says English folk rock band Mumford & Sons pulled her out of a depressive state. The singer credits the band consisting of Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall and Ted Dwane as the inspiration behind her own album.

I f**king love Mumford & Sons. This song [After the Storm] is so beautiful, it kind of makes me cry and smile at the same time. Sigh No More was [my ex's and my] record. We blossomed to that record and we died to that record, she explained. Whenever I put it on, I want to write about my ex. I don't think my album would be here yet if it hadn't been for that record. I'd still be home drunk in the dark moping around my flat.

After performing at the 2011 BRIT Awards, Adeles track Someone Like You reached number one in the United Kingdom, while the album also topped the charts.

21 has spent 11 consecutive weeks at number one in Britain, the longest ever by a female solo artist on the UK Album Chart, surpassing Madonna's nine weeks at number one in 1990. (C) Cover Media
