Alicia Keys: I wasn't right for the industry

6th July 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Alicia Keys didn't fit the music industry's "formula" when she initially started out.

The US songstress first burst onto the scene in 2001 with her debut album Songs in A Minor. The record was a commercial success and earned Alicia five Grammy Awards including Best New Artist and Song of the Year for Fallin'.

The 30-year-old star says music executives were unconvinced about her ability to break the charts when she first arrived.

"I found that people, like heads of different labels or executives that were in the industry, didn't really know what to do or felt like it was too different. They felt like there was a formula that worked so why not stick to that formula," she told Pride magazine. "But I think that people really found it refreshing and felt that there was something more to relate to so I was really proud to be that person that could be more."

Alicia has an eight-month old son, Egypt, with her husband Swizz Beatz. The stunning star, who married the rapper and record producer in July of last year, says her life feels more complete now she has a family.

"You know, it's just definitely made everything so much better and so much more powerful I think. I've always been someone who felt things very deeply and been a very empathetic individual so with songwriting, with life period and living life I realise how important every single day is," she explained. "It makes me so happy, it makes me just feel full, it makes me complete so I really have clarity and feel more at peace." (C) Cover Media
