(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Anne Hathaway has joked she's been attracted to some of her gay best friends.

The actress is Emma in One Day, with Jim Sturgess playing her character's love interest Dexter. The pair meet on their last day of university and the movie follows them on that same day over the next 20 years.

It's based on the book by David Nicholls and has sparked a lot of discussion about whether men and women can be platonic friends, a subject Anne is happy to muse over.

"I think it depends if they're gay! My best friends are all gay men and I've never felt sexually attracted to [them]. Well, that's not true but it makes things less complicated in that department. I think the reason the question keeps cropping up is because there might not be an answer," she said.

While Dexter is self-assured and keen for a glamorous life, Emma worries about her appearance and struggles to find happiness. Anne found that aspect of the story particularly interesting as it allowed her to play with the idea of being uncomfortable.

"I find awkward very fun to play it comes naturally to me! I happen to be good at awkward, because I am awkward! So if you've got it, flaunt it!" she laughed to Look magazine. (C) Cover Media
