(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz have announced they are to divorce.

The music stars tied the knot in May 2008 and have a two-year-old son together called Bronx. The couple have confirmed the split via a representative.

"After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to file for divorce," the couple said through a spokesperson. "We remain friends and deeply committed and loving parents to our son Bronx, whose happiness and well-being remains our number one priority. We ask that everyone honour our privacy as we navigate this next phase of our lives."

It has been reported Ashlee filed documents at the Los Angeles Superior Court to end the relationship.

According to website TMZ, the 26-year-old has cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split. She is believed to have requested joint legal custody and primary physical custody of their child.

It has also been claimed Ashlee is seeking spousal and child support from the Fall Out Boy bassist.

Sources have suggested the couple did not agree to a pre-nuptial before they tied the knot.

The news of the split comes just days before Valentines Day. In the time leading up the special holiday last year, Ashlee revealed Pete was a true romantic and loved to surprise her with thoughtful gifts.

Every Valentines Day is sweet, she revealed. Petes very creative, so hes always coming up with something clever and surprising me. Hopefully Ill surprise him this year.

She has also previously said having Bronx had made her relationship with Pete stronger and she hated spending time away from her 31-year-old rocker husband. (C) Cover Media
