Ashley Jensen: Playing a frog was surreal

1st February 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Ashley Jensen says it was remarkably easy to play a frog in her new movie Gnomeo & Juliet.

The Scottish actress found lending her voice to the character of Nanette in the animation an interesting experience. She voiced the majority of her scenes in a room on her own and didnt meet many of the other actors involved until the movies premiere. Ashley wasnt sure how long it would take her to get into the role, but was surprised to discover she soon began to connect to the character.

It was remarkably easy to channel my inner frog actually, she said in an interview for British television show Daybreak. Kind of surreal, once you have got over the fact that you are in a recording booth on your own, not looking at anyone or relating to anyone its quite an unusual way of working it was actually really good fun. It was like being a ten-year-old in your bedroom making funny voices. Its very odd hearing your voice come out of something thats not real.

I found it liberating and quite freeing to be in that little room, because you thought no one was watching you.

Ashley who has appeared in television shows including The Office and Ugly Betty hopes Gnomeo & Juliet will inspire a whole new audience to become familiar with the works of English playwright William Shakespeare.

The 41-year-old star is confident the movie which is inspired by Shakespeares classic tale of star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet will show younger cinemagoers how entertaining classic tales can be.

Its the greatest love story ever told and the stories of Shakespeare are just so wonderful, she added. I think its such a brilliant introduction for children to Shakespeare because they can sometimes be a bit intimidating so I think that takes the myth out of it. (C) Cover Media
