Beth Ditto: I like Lagerfeld’s quirkiness

6th September 2010

(Cover) - EN Fashion - Beth Ditto thinks Karl Lagerfeld gets judged unfairly because of his “quirky” personality.

The American star is famous for being the frontwoman of rock band The Gossip, although she has also emerged as a fashion icon in recent years.

Curvaceous Beth has been embraced by some of the biggest names in fashion such as model Kate Moss and Chanel creative director Karl, who admires her outrageous fashion sense and refusal to conform to the size zero trend.

Beth says she had always been a fan of Karl’s, and she thinks people are wrong to mock him for his dress sense and extravagant behaviour. The singer can sympathise with Karl’s desire to be different, and says people shouldn’t assume he’s had an easy life.

“Karl Lagerfeld might have grown up with money, but you can’t tell me it was always just super-easy for him being that quirky, eccentric, creative person and it’s still not because he still gets judged all the time for being that person,” she told the British edition of Marie Claire magazine.

Beth admits that as a child growing up in America she idolised the German designer’s eccentricity, and cites attending one of his fashion shows as one of the happiest moments of her life.

“I remember watching TV as a kid and seeing Karl Lagerfeld with his fan and his ponytail and his shades and I was like, ‘Who is that? I wanted to learn more,’” she explained.

Beth added that sitting next to the creative director of American Vogue magazine at Karl’s catwalk show was one of the happiest moments of her life.

“The coolest thing ever was probably being at Karl Lagerfeld’s show at Paris Fashion Week and being seated directly next to Grace Coddington. And I made her laugh out loud,” she recalled. (C) Cover Media
