9th September 2011

"Ain't no sunshine when she's gone..." A blue-eyed, young handsome guy is walking in the snow, in changing weather, sad at his loss of his love... This is a song from the movie Notting Hill where Hugh Grant with his boyish charm, maturity and British accent, stole everyone's heart. This handsome hunk is turning 51 today.

Hugh John Mungo Grant, an English actor and film producer, was born at Hammersmith Hospital in Hammersmith, London, England to a family with many notable ancestors. Grant's accent is an inheritance from his mother and on Inside the Actors Studio in 2002, he credited her with "any acting genes that he might have." Viewing acting as nothing more than a creative outlet, he joined the Oxford University Dramatic Society and starred in a successful touring production of 'Twelfth Night'.

Right from the start, there was something magical about Hugh Grant. Grant's first leading role came in Merchant-Ivory's 1987 Edwardian drama, Maurice, adapted from E.M. Forster's novel of the same name. He and co-star James Wilby shared the Volpi Cup for best actor at the Venice Film Festival for their portrayals of Cantabrigian collegians Clive Durham and Maurice Hall, respectively. His big break though, was Four Weddings and a Funeral. This movie established him and made him what he is today. His role in Notting Hill was well-received and his chemistry with Julia Roberts was much appreciated. He later went on to act in many different roles.

Hugh Grant is a very professional person and likes to keep his personal life to himself. In fact, he is well known for having very strong work ethics. Even though he was often caught up in controveries, he sorted himself out in a very mature manner. His arrests, to scandals and his girlfriends have always caught the media's attention but he is also under the scanner for various other things like his love for sports. Grant is a scratch golfer and is a regular at pro-am tournaments with membership at the Sunningdale Golf Club. He is also a fan of Scottish side Rangers F.C.

He also does his bit for the society. Hugh Grant is a patron of The DIPEx Charity a charity that publishes the websites Healthtalkonline and Youthhealthtalk; and a Patron of the Fynvola Foundation, named after his late mother, a charity which provides nursing and care for older learning disabled people.

In his entire career, Hugh Grant has received many awards like a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA, and an Honorary César.
