Britney Spears reportedly desires to "resume control of her life."
The 30-year-old pop star visited court last week to allegedly seek approval to become a judge on American TV talent competition the X Factor.
Britney's father Jamie has acted as her conservator for four years following the singer's public mental breakdown.
With a wedding to her fianc Jason Trawick and a potential gig on the X Factor on the horizon, Britney wants the power to make personal and professional decisions without her father's sanction.
"Britney has said that she feels she is ready to resume control of her life," a source told Radar Online. "She has expressed this sentiment on multiple occasions, but her doctor believes that Britney isn't ready for the conservatorship to be lifted. She has come a very long way in the last 18 months especially but her team wants more time."
Although Britney desires independence now, the conservatorship won't be lifted for months.
"It looks like it won't be ending anytime soon, but Britney feels that she is powerless to fight it," the source explained. "She has been on two wildly successful worldwide concert tours, has gotten engaged, and is now in talks to join a major television show, what more does she have to do to prove to people that she is ready to resume control of her life? Britney has been told Jamie's lawyers could petition the judge for the conservatorship to end later this year, and not anytime sooner."
Britney will reportedly be paid $15 million should she join the X Factor panel.
On February 22, Simon revealed the new judging line-up would be unveiled in a few weeks.
