Born in Dublin, to well known parents, Colin was raised as a Roman Catholic. He was educated at St. Brigid's National School Castleneck followed by Castleneck College and Gormanston College. He attended The Gaiety School of Acting, but dropped out when he got his first break in a drama show.
He was a part of the BBC television drama, 'Ballykissangel' where he appeared on the show seven times. He was inspired to take up an acting career when he watched the movie 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial' which literally made him cry.
