(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Colin Firth said he felt entirely on his own when working on techniques for The Kings Speech.
In the movie the actor plays Britains King George VI, who tries to combat a stammer so he can give public addresses.
Colin believes struggling with speech impediments is such an intensely personal experience that when it came to authentically portraying it on film, he had to rely heavily on his own imagination.
I didnt really start with technique, He told the BBC Breakfast Show. There really isnt a manual on how to start and so it is purely a journey of the imagination and youre on your own. You director can help judge whats going on and how much, how little, whether he thinks its authentic or not, but youre on your own.
The actor revealed he drew most inspiration from the author of the script, David Seidler, who suffered from a stammer himself.
Colin said that if David hadnt been so open about his experiences, it would have been much harder to portray the frustration of having a speech impediment.
I think the most valuable resource for me was out writer David Seidler, Colin said. He was the author of the material we were working with but he was also somebody who had stammered since childhood and he was extremely expressive about his childhood. (C) Cover Media
