David Beckham reportedly "cried" after being told he had not made the Great Britain soccer squad for the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games.

The LA Galaxy star apparently had to be consoled by wife Victoria after being snubbed, according to Britain's Mirror newspaper.

David and his brood are said to have "block-booked the summer" in anticipation of cheering on the footballer but have been left "really disappointed."

"He cried after finding out that he hadn't made it," a source to the publication. "Victoria and the kids were all absolutely gutted too. He was pretty inconsolable."

His celebrity friends including Tom Cruise and TV chef Gordon Ramsay contacted him to give their commiserations as did Prince William.

London 2012 head Lord Coe will apparently now try to come up with a role for David so he can continue to be involved.

"There is no other athlete with such a huge global appeal than David and he's very much the crown jewels in terms of selling Britain and the Olympics," a source said. "So there's a sense of total incredulity that he's been cast aside."
