Geoffrey Rush: Depp is a clown

12th May 2011

(Cover) - EN Movies - Geoffrey Rush says Johnny Depp has found a personal clown in his Pirates of the Caribbean character.

The Australian actor plays Captain Hector Barbossa in the fourth instalment of the hugely-popular Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, On Stranger Tides. He stars alongside Johnny, who portrays eccentric pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, with Penlope Cruz also appearing.

The 59-year-old says Johnny was waiting for the hugely-successful part all of his acting life.

The spark in this film is like a screwball comedy. Penlope is pretty feisty. Jack Sparrow has met his match [with her character Angelica], he said in an interview with BBC Breakfast. I think Johnny has found a personal clown. Jack Sparrow has been lurking in his mind for a long time and hes been lucky to finally let rip.

Geoffrey says the CGI in Pirates of the Caribbean is breath-taking. He believes shooting on location, and in particular going out to sea, definitely adds to the element of adventure and allows him to get into character.

Well, you know, you go out to shoot scenes ten miles out to sea. Its highly adventurous. That helps up the characterisation. The CGI is breath-taking but I totally forget some of the scenes are not synthetic in any way, he said.

There is definitely a fifth [movie] on the drawing board. There are so many more stories to tell. There is more to come.

Captain Hector Barbossa is a privateer in the court of King George II. Geoffrey also starred alongside Colin Firth in the critically-acclaimed movie The Kings Speech, about Britains King George VIs efforts to overcome a stammer.

Geoffrey was therapist Lionel Logue in the movie and has joked appearing alongside a character called George works well for him.

Working with any King George at the moment is golden, he laughed. (C) Cover Media
