14th December 2011

George Clooney has been nominated alongside Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio for a coveted Screen Actors Guild Award.

The nominations for the prestigious film awards ceremony have been announced, with big names leading the pack.

George garnered critical acclaim for his role as Matt King in the 2011 drama The Descendants. As a result, he has been named in the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of the father-of-two.

Brad has been recognised for his performance in Moneyball, while Leonardo has been nominated for J. Edgar.

Jean Dujardin and Demain Bichir have also been named in the category.

Tilda Swinton has been nominated alongside the likes of Meryl Streep and Michelle Williams for the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.

Tilda gained recognition for her role in the big screen adaptation of the best-selling novel We Need to Talk about Kevin. Meryl was nominated for her portrayal of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, while Michelle Williams' take on screen icon Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn is also in the running for the award.

Viola Davis and Glenn Close have also been nominated for the gong.

In the supporting categories, Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain were both nominated for their roles in the popular drama The Help.

Melissa McCarthy was recognised for her role in comedy hit Bridesmaids. Berenice Bejo and Janet McTeer are also in the running.

Male supporting contenders are Christopher Plummer, Kenneth Branagh, Nick Nolte, Armie Hammer and Jonah Hill.

The Help has emerged as the top feature film nominee, with four nominations, including Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
