Halle Berry: Gabriel and I were meant to have a child

12th August 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Halle Berry thinks she met her ex-partner Gabriel Aubry so they could have a child together, but was unprepared to be unhappy with him for her daughter’s sake.

The pair have two-year-old daughter Nahla together, but ended their four-year romance earlier this year. Until now, Halle has not spoken of the relationship breakdown, but she has now revealed things were just not working between her and the model. She remains glad she met him because she is now a mother, but is adamant it was right for them to go their separate ways.

“It's just that you realise you are not meant to go the distance with everybody,” she explained to Vogue magazine. “We were meant to bring this amazing little person into the world. And I think that's why we came together. And because of that, we are going to be together forever, all three of us."

Halle has been married twice before, to David Justice and Eric Benet. As both unions ended acrimoniously she vowed never to marry again, claiming she and Gabriel didn’t need to wed to know how much they meant to each other. It’s a decision she is sticking by, although she insists that doesn’t mean she will be on her own for the rest of her life.

“Yes. I'm not done with love, but I refuse to settle,” she said, when asked if she still plans not to wed again. “I am a hopeless romantic. And I won't stop till I get it right. I don't think I'm unlike a lot of people. I am just someone who is trying to find that mate, and I think it's a really hard thing to do. And I'm not willing to stay somewhere where I am really not happy. And I am not willing to pretend I am for the kid's sake or so that I don't have to go through another public humiliation."

The 43-year-old added she thinks “God got it wrong” when he was designing women, as they should be more fertile as they get older. She finds it unfathomable that it can be so easy to conceive when females are in their early 20s, yet when they are ready to become parents later in life it is harder.

The star does not often give interviews as she prefers to be private, although she knows that brings its own problems. People have the wrong opinion of her – they think she is quiet and heartbroken, when really she is a strong woman who loves laughing with her toddler.

“That I am this brooding, twisted, lovesick person who just can't get it right in life. Every story about me is so heavy and dramatic. That's not how I do life. But that's the impression people have, and that's what keeps getting reiterated. As if I'm still stuck in all the muck of the past. And I am so not,” she said, when asked about misconceptions about her.

“I taught Nahla my name in case she gets lost. I asked her it and she thought about it for a second, and finally she said, 'Halle Blueberries!' Blueberries are her favourite fruit. I'm just glad she didn't say 'Halle Blackberry.' " (C) Cover Media
