(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Katy Perry, Adele and Lady Gaga were among the big winners at last night's MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).
Katy arrived at the ceremony in the Nokia Theatre, Los Angeles, in an Asian-inspired outfit. Her pink hair was styled into flattering curls while she twirled an ornate umbrella in her hands.
The singer picked up the coveted Video of the Year prize for her track Firework. Her song E.T.
which features Kanye West saw her win two other awards, Best Collaboration and Best SFX (Special Affects).
Kanye caused uproar at the 2009 ceremony when he stormed the stage when Taylor Swift won the Best Female Video prize for You Belong With Me in 2009, saying Beyonc should have triumphed for the promo for Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It). It was a fact not lost of Katy when she took to the stage to collect her Moonman for Best Collaboration.
"Now this is the time when you want to interrupt me, Kanye!" she laughed.
Lady Gaga opened the show, choosing to take to the stage as her alter-ego Jo Calderone to perform You and I. She stayed in character throughout the whole ceremony. She took home prizes for Best Female Video for Born This Way and Best Video with a Message for the same track.
Although the flamboyant singer's antics were overshadowed by Beyonc Knowles' announcement that she's pregnant, she still managed to raise some laughs.
Poking fun at herself, Jo said about Gaga: "She gets out of the bed, puts on the heels, she goes into the bathroom, I hear the water go on. She comes out of the bathroom dripping wet, she's still got the heels on."
She also presented Britney Spears with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Jo went in for a kiss when handing Britney the prize, but was rebuffed.
"I've done that already," Britney laughed, referring to her iconic smooch with Madonna at the 2003 ceremony.
Adele's promo for Rolling In The Deep received gongs for Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Direction.
Other winners included Foo Fighters who received the Best Rock Video gong for Walk and Nicki Minaj whose promo for Super Bass garnered the Best Hip Hop Video prize.
