Keith Urban: Rehab could have ruined my marriage

30th November 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Keith Urban feared checking into rehab shortly after marrying Nicole Kidman would destroy their union.

The couple tied the knot in June 2006, but in October of the same year Keith sought help for drug and alcohol addiction at the Betty Ford Center in California. He released a statement apologising to Nicole, and has now revealed how scary the time was for him. The country singer was terrified his problems would cause the end of his marriage.

[I thought], 'Surely let's give it a few years so we've got some solidity, because this kind of thing could tear us apart. This could just destroy us, he explained to US talk show host Oprah Winfrey. Where she should have just walked... I'm just so glad she didn't. She made a decision to turn around and initiate this adventure.

The 43-year-old explained that stint in a clinic was the third time he had been to rehab in eight years. It was actually Nicole, along with some of their friends, who asked Keith to get help. She held an intervention, which made Keith see he had issues.

It was really a profound moment in so many ways. The way in which Nic handled that moment was just perfect... Everything was just designed, I believe, for that moment to fuse us together, he said. I had to make a decision which road I was going to take, once and for all. I'd been at that crossroads before and always taken the wrong road.

The star added he thinks being in love is what finally made the difference to his recovery. He left for treatment the night of the intervention, and is now happier with his life than ever before.

The couple have two-year-old daughter Sunday Rose together, and being parents has also made them closer. Keith says he is in the best place he ever has been since marrying Nicole, who was equally as glowing about the union.

I think marriage is about, every day, trying to make it better and working through things and when things are tough, saying, 'I'm going to come to you and talk, she said. We're just very tight, and we stay really tight. (C) Cover Media
