Livia Giuggioli discusses upcycled gown

4th March 2011

(Cover) - EN Star Style - Colin Firths wife wore an upcycled dress to the Oscars because she wants people to be more aware of the impact their clothing has on the environment.

Colin won best actor at the Academy Awards, thanks to his portrayal of Britains King George VI in The Kings Speech. His spouse Livia Giuggioli was proudly by his side, wearing a pale pink gown with an organza train. Many column inches were dedicated to her attire after it was revealed the dress had been constructed from 11 other robes, and Livia has now discussed why ethical fashion is so important to her.

Last year my friend Lucy Siegle challenged me to go through all the red carpets unfurled for the awards season dressed exclusively in sustainable style. We began tentatively and built up steam. By last Sunday I had the (eco) confidence to enter the Kodak Theatre in a dress made by designer Gary Harvey from eleven pre-loved, forgotten and damaged dresses from the era of The King's Speech, she explained on HuffingtonPost.com.

Just to place myself in the green scene, I am not a classic eco warrior and should confess that I'm even a little tired of words such as eco, green and ethical. It's more that I dream of a world where everything is ecological, green and ethical so that actually we don't have to define them anymore.

Livia believes people should think as much about what they wear as they do their food. The carbon imprints clothes create are immense, and it surprises her that most dont take that into consideration.

Trying to wear green clothing to big events has totally changed Livia, and she thinks its something everyone should look into.

The Green Carpet Challenge has always been about raising the profile of designs and designers who do things different to the mainstream. They prioritise social and environmental justice along with their aesthetic. It has also been responsible for educating me on the trials and triumphs of wearing fashion with ethics. Once you get into this I don't think it's possible to go back, she said. (C) Cover Media
