(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Madonna would never give up her Queen of Pop "throne" for love.
The 53-year-old superstar is at the Venice Film Festival in Italy this week promoting her second directorial undertaking W.E. The film chronicles British King Edward VIII's romance with American divorcee Wallis Simpson for whom he abdicated in the 1930s.
According to the Independent, when asked whether she would give up her prominent position in society in the pursuit of love, Madonna chuckled at the thought.
"Would I ever give up my throne for a man or a woman? I think I can have both... or all three!" Madonna laughed.
Madonna had deep sympathy for Wallis' role in the situation. The intense human narrative of their romance made a big impact on Madonna while filming.
"I empathise with Wallis. Public figures or icons are often just reduced to a soundbite, just a handful of attributes," Madonna explained. "I think people tried to diminish her... I tried to make her human."
Relinquishing one's throne in favour of love is deeply admirable in Madonna's opinion. The former king's passion resonated with her.
"I was deeply and utterly swept up by the reasons why Edward VIII would give up the throne, relinquish his great position of power, for love," Madonna said.
W.E. starring Abbie Cornish and James D'Arcy screens at the Venice Film Festival today. (C) Cover Media
