Michelle Williams has gushed that her Oscar nomination is a tribute to her screen idol.

The actress was recognised for her starring role in My Week With Marilyn about Monroe's time in the UK filming the Prince and the Showgirl.

But the 31-year-old believes that the Oscar nod also goes to further highlight what a legend Marilyn is.

"This role has been the challenge and privilege of a lifetime," Michelle said. "I would like to think that the recognition our film has received by the Academy is a testament to Marilyn's legacy."

"I am so grateful to be acknowledged by the Academy for my work, which was made possible by the support of our director Simon Curtis and the camaraderie of a terrific ensemble of actors."

Her co-star Kenneth Branagh also received a nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category for his portrayal of Sir Laurence Olivier.

This is Michelle's third Oscar nomination after receiving a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Brokeback Mountain in 2005 and Best Actress nod for Blue Valentine in 2010.
