Modern Family dominate Emmys

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Modern Family dominated the winner's board at last night's 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards.

The critically acclaimed ABC comedy show took the award for Outstanding Comedy Series for the second year in a row.

Ty Burrell, who plays father Phil Dunphy, and Julie Bowen, who plays his wife Claire Dunphy in the series, won the Emmy for Best Supporting Actor and Actress respectively in a comedy series.

It was the first Emmy win for both actors.

Bowen bested her co-star Sofia Vergara as well as Kristen Wiig, Jane Krakowski, Jane Lynch and Betty White. Burrell who dedicated his win to his late father beat Ed O'Neill and Eric Stonestreet, as well as Chris Colfer and Jon Cryer to the coveted title.

Modern Family went on to pick up awards for best writing and directing too.

Mad Men was named Best Drama Series for the fourth year in a row, beating Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, Friday Night Lights, Game of Thrones and The Good Wife.

Executive producer Matthew Weiner called the win "an incredible dream."

Friday Night Lights actor Kyle Chandler received the statuette for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, beating off competition from Michael C. Hall, Timothy Olyphant, Steve Buscemi, Hugh Laurie and Jon Hamm.

Kate Winslet picked up the lead actress in a miniseries or movie Emmy, for her starring role in the HBO drama Mildred Pierce.

Julianna Margulies was named Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for The Good Wife over Kathy Bates, Mariska Hargitay, Elisabeth Moss, Connie Briton and Mireille Enos.

Mike & Molly star Melissa McCarthy was named Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, and gave an emotional response.

"Wow, it's my first and best pageant ever!" she explained. "I'm sorry, I'm a cryer - I'm from Plainfield, IL, I'm standing here and it's kind of amazing."

Fellow nominees Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Laura Linney, Martha Plimpton and Edie Falco all joined the star on stage to congratulate her on her first win.

The Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons was named Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, which was his second consecutive win.

The actor was presented with the award by Charlie Sheen. He beat a host of actors for the coveted award including co-star Johnny Galecki, Matt LeBlanc, Steve Carell, Louis C.K. and Alec Baldwin.

Downton Abbey collected a total of four Emmys including best miniseries or movie, and a supporting actress award for Dame Maggie Smith, who was not at the ceremony.

Friday Night Lights earned Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series and Martin Scorsese won his first-ever director Emmy for Boardwalk Empire.

Glee star Jane Lynch kept her presenting at the awards show energetic with an entertaining opening number.
