Paul Feig open' to Bridesmaids sequel

28th July 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Paul Feig has revealed that everyone involved in hit comedy Bridesmaids is "open" to a sequel.

The director hinted there is initial interest in making a follow-up to the hit film about an unlucky in love maid of honour and her disastrous attempts to help organise her best friend's wedding.

Paul, who is also an actor and has appeared in Bad Teacher and Knocked Up, insisted he would only support a follow-up to Bridesmaids if it was produced in the right way and not for profit.

"Any interest in that is very, very unofficial," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "There's nothing officially in the works right now, but we're all open to it in a way. We just have to figure out a way to make it right. The minute you make a movie that does very well, studios want to do another one. But speaking for all of us, we would only want to do it if we knew it would be as good or better than the first one. None of us want to just do the thing to make a lot of money and ruin the memory of the first one."

The director also expressed his opinion on why comedy sequels often fail.

Paul said that while there are plenty of grotesque moments in the original Bridesmaids movie which starred Rose Byrne and Kristen Wiig - writers and filmmakers have to be careful to avoid losing touch with reality.

"We have to have a real story that doesn't have any moments where people say, okay, that's fake or that's dumb, or anything that puts people off," he said. "That's always where too many comedies fall apart, there's always some moment where, to get the joke across, they go to big or too broad." (C) Cover Media
