(Cover) - EN Movies - Paul Feig has explained his method for ensuring he doesn't lose a scene's "first-time magic".
The American director is best known for creating the critically acclaimed show Freaks and Geeks and directing several episodes of The Office.
His latest project is Bridesmaids, a comedy starring Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Matt Lucas, Chris O'Dowd, Melissa McCarthy and Jon Hamm.
Paul says he used two cameras in order to capture the film's funniest dialogue. In two-way conversations, the filmmaker pointed different cameras at different actors rather than the usual practice of having both cameras on one actor and shooting the same scene twice.
Paul says this technique adds to the comedic value of a scene, especially when it is able to capture improvised dialogue.
"We do so much improv and throw so many curve balls at the actors while they're performing that we record both sides of the conversation at the same time," he explained in an interview with Variety. "You have these amazing moments that happen and if you've only got one side of it, it's impossible to re-create it again on the other side; you lose that first-time magic. This type of comedy is never the same when you say it twice."
Bridesmaids was penned by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo and centres on character Annie, portrayed by Kristen, and her experiences as maid of honour at her best friend's wedding. (C) Cover Media
