Portia de Rossi: I am at peace now

3rd November 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Portia de Rossi is finally happy now she doesnt have a secret darkness she is ashamed of.

The American actress has given a string of interviews to promote the release of her memoir Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and Gain, in which she recounts her battle with an eating disorder. In it, Portia admits she weighed just 82lbs. at the height of her illness and survived on 300 calories a day.

The star has overcome her eating issues, and is now happily married to talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. She admits she still isnt totally satisfied with her body, but those negative feelings no longer rule her life.

Look, I don't think I'm perfect. I still don't like my thighs, she told People magazine. But I'm not going to do anything to compromise my health or my sanity to change them. I don't want to have secrets anymore. I don't want to have a darkness that I feel that I should be ashamed of. And going forward now, without having anything to hide, the future looks pretty bright.

Portia has discussed how skewed her self-perception was when she was suffering from anorexia and bulimia, revealing she had no idea how ill she looked. Although at times she realised her arms were too slender, she thought the rest of her body was normal.

At the time, I thought, 'OK, my arms look awful so I should cover them up, but my legs look pretty OK now," she said. "I didn't think I was crazy to only eat 300 calories a day. That made perfect sense to me.

Portia has recorded an interview with her wife set to air on her talk show later this week, in which she praises Ellen for helping her feel good about herself. The 37-year-old has now further discussed how deeply learning to be happy has affected her.

To be able to get to a point where you're just happy with who you are, I think that's when you know what real peace feels like, she told the magazine. (C) Cover Media
