Rakesh Roshan was born in Mumbai on 6th September, 1949 in a Hindu Kayastha family. His father was a Bollywood music director. Rakesh Roshan's younger brother, Rajesh Roshan is also a music director. Rakesh Roshan started his career as an actor in the 1970 movie 'Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani'. This film was a stepping stone for his glorious years to come in the industry in which, he acted in as many as 60 films or more.

In the year 1980, he started his own production company called Filmkraft and their first production was 'Aap Ke Deewani' in 1980. As a director, his first film was 'Khudgarz' in 1987 and later he went on to makes super hit films like 'Kishen Kanhaiya', 'Karan Arjun' and 'Khoon Bhari Maang'.

'Kaho Na Pyaar Hai', the movie through which he launched his son Hrithik Roshan, entered the Limca Book of Records for the most number of awards won by a Bollywood film. Most of his next directions were for his son.

Throughout his life and career, Rakesh Roshan has received many awards and accolades. In 2006, he was honoured for his contribution to mainstream cinema at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Panaji. He was similarly honoured for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema for the past 35 years, at the Global Indian Film Awards.

Rakesh Roshan is a man with a happy professional as well as personal life. He married film actress Pinky, daughter of director J. Om Prakash.
