Ralph Fiennes: I'll miss my rotten teeth

8th July 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Ralph Fiennes will miss his "rotten teeth" now that the Harry Potter film series has come to an end.

The British actor plays Lord Voldemort in the hugely successful fantasy franchise, whose concluding chapter Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 hits cinemas this month.

The arch-enemy of Harry Potter, Voldemort's obsession with bloody purity signifies his aim to rid the Wizarding world of non-magical Muggles and to conquer both worlds.

Ralph, who first appeared in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, wore prosthetic make-up to achieve the menacing look of the villain, and the star has joked he will miss the unsavoury fake dentures he had to wear for the role.

"I was sad to say bye to my rotten teeth I had, which I'm now in possession of. The make-up was a bit of a trial, but it was ok. It took about two, two and a half hours. I got used to it," he revealed in an interview with BBC Radio Five. "That amount of time in make-up isn't actually too bad. Some make up can take a lot longer than that. A film I did called English Patient that took around three to four hours."

Ralph hopes his villainous character frightens children. The 48-year-old says he was pleased with his portrayal, and hopes that his intensity transfers to audiences when they watch the fantasy films.

"I'm inside it, I can't tell. I hope it is," he said when asked if his first appearance will go down in film history as a terrifying moment. "I thought it was very effective when I saw it. I thought Mike Newell did a great job. He should be scary, I hope Voldemort is scary for young people."

Ralph says Voldemort was an interesting character to play. The Hollywood actor says there was an intriguing antithesis between the villain's power and weaknesses.

"As he is approaching victory and creating the world he wants, he's actually being stripped of his power and his soul is being destroyed. That was quite interesting to play that madness of someone who is sort of withering, even though he is achieving," he explained. (C) Cover Media
