Rewind: Bollywood 2011

30th December 2011

Each year brings with it a new hope, a new beginning and a lot of new movies. At the end of 2010, we made a list of the most awaited movies of 2011. But did they all stand up to our expectations or did they fall flat? Before we welcome 2012, FridayMoviez gives you a recap of the Bollywood 2011

2011 started off on a great note with the movie No One Killed Jessica. This sensational movie, based on a true story became an instant favorite amongst people while Vidya Balan & Rani Mukherjee’s powerful roles were even more attention-seeking factors. Let's have a look at the movies which brought about something different and made the year 2011 really special-

1.   Rockstar- The movie got extreme reactions. The ones who loved it, absolutely adored the movie while the rest of the audience thought it was an absurd movie. But whether the movie was liked or disliked, two things cannot be denied- first, Ranbir Kapoor was brilliant and second the music by A. R. Rahman was mesmerizing.

2.   Murder 2- Knowing what the first Murder was all about, not much was expected from the movie but it came as a pleasant surprise. The movie was gripping, the acting was superb and the music was loved.

3.   I am Kalam- Is it about APJ Abdul Kalam? That is what people thought initially. But no, the movie is about a little kid and his dreams. The movie won several awards and again made its mark in Bollywood.

4.  I Am- Extremely sensitive, sensational topics are a specialty of Onir and I Am is just another such attempt. Not only the director but the actors in this movie are its strength.

5.  The Dirty Picture- The only reason the movie is in this list is for Vidya Balan. The movie is different, spectacular and a first of its kind for Bollywood. Whether the movie was good or not is debatable but Vidya Balan's outstanding acting skills are indisputable.

Movies like Yeh Saali Zindagi, Shaitan, Chillar Party, Zindagi Na Milegi Doobara, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster and Singham were also spectacular. Shaitan had brilliant cinematography, story-line and suspense and of course Kalki Koechlin's acting. Yeh Saali Zindagi again brought to us Sudhir Mishra's excellent efforts and a brilliant performance by Chitrangada Singh. Chillar Party was one of the highly underappreciated films of 2011. The film was fun, light and yet intelligent. The entire team of child  artists were a delight to watch. Zindagi Milegi Na Doobara brought the good-old "Dil Chahta Hai" days back to us, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster was a fresh take on an "inspired" story and Singham gave us a totally new South-Indian flavor.

Many will wonder why Delhi Belly, Force, Ra.One or maybe even Ready haven't made it to the list but the simple reason is that these movies weren't spectacular or didn't leave a stamp of difference on Indian Cinema. They were no doubt good but they were also highly controversial. Many couldn't digest Delhi Belly's potty-jokes and found them too atrocious. Same was the case with Ready and Bodyguard where on one hand people thought they were brilliant Salman Khan movies; many others were frustrated at his brainless efforts and found the movies pure torture. Ra.One was a box office hit but it was also a feast for Shah Rukh Khan haters. Don 2 is the closing film of the year 2011. It received massive response and is sure to break a lot of box-office records but again, even this movie disappointed many.

2011 was also a year of introduction of several fresh faces in the industry. With movies like Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge, Luv Ka the End and Pyaar Ka Punchanama, many new faces were introduced in Bollywood. Not all of these movies were hits but the youngsters, at whom these movies were targeted, loved them.

2011 was a year full of movies on Yeh Saali Zindagi, some F.A.L.T.U. movies and some Bin Bulaye Baraatis... It had Murders, it had Rascals, and it also spoke on Love Breakups and Zindagi. Overall, we can say that 2011 wasn't a very Dirty Picture.

With the end of 2011, there is again a list of anticipated movies like Agneepath, Ek Tha Tiger, Sher Khan, Housefull 2, Kyaa Super Kool Hai Hum, Ek Main aur Ekk Tu and so on for the year 2012. We can only hope that 2012 will turn out, if not better, at least as good as this year. Goodbye 2011!!!
