Saxena walks out of jail

15th September 2011

W Hansraj Saxena, the chief operating officer (COO) of Sun Pictures which is owned by Kalanithi Maran, media magnate and grand-nephew of DMK president and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, has been released on bail.

After more than 70 days, Saxena walked out of prison at 11.15 am on Wednesday. He was arrested in July on charges of cheating and intimidating film producers and distributors. His co-accused, R Ayyappan, is yet to be released as his bail petition has been dismissed.

On last Friday, Saxena and Ayyappan deposed before Metropolitan Magistrate M P Ram in Saidapet and alleged custodial torture by the CB-CID.

When the CB-CID produced the duo before the judge seeking to remand them under judicial custody, Ayyappan, who was dhoti-clad, showed him the wounds he allegedly sustained during custodial torture. Ayyappan, who was unable to stand on his own, as both his legs had wounds and scars, pleaded with the judge to save them from the police torture.

The duo claimed that when they were taken to custody by the CB-CID in connection with the 'Thambikottai' film cheating case, the police treated them in an inhuman manner, beat them up and forced them to implicate Kalanithi Maran in the cheating case.
