(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Sofia Coppola and Thomas Mars have married.

The filmmaker and Phoenix frontman tied the knot in a civil ceremony in Italy yesterday. They chose to wed in Bernalda in South Italy, which is where Sofia's grandparents are from. The ceremony was held at a villa owned by the director's father, Francis Ford Coppola.

"Everything went well. It was simple, calm, in the garden," Mayor Leonardo Chiruzzi, who officiated, told The Associated Press.

Sofia wore a lilac Azzedine Alaa dress and was walked down the aisle by Francis. He was seen signing autographs before the ceremony, wearing a white linen suit with a pink shirt.

Francis has spent a great deal of time renovating the villa where the wedding took place and hopes to turn into a small hotel in the future.

"If they wanted to do a Hollywood wedding, they wouldn't have done it here," Leonardo added. "[They] chose to do it here because it's here - it's here that is beautiful."

Around 80 guests were invited to the nuptials, among them director George Lucas. Johnny Depp is also thought to have attended.

The wedding meal consisted of salad, pasta, cheese, figs, pork and fish, topped off with wine made at Sofia's family's farm. The cake was vanilla flavoured and had flower decorations.

Sofia and Thomas announced they were engaged in May. They have been together for several years and already have daughters Romy, four, and 15-month-old Cosima.

The 40-year-old filmmaker was previously married to Spike Jonze, with the pair divorcing in 2003. (C) Cover Media
