Ty Burrell: Modern Family promotes gay rights

3rd October 2012

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Ty Burrell thinks his TV show Modern Family is "revolutionary".

Ty stars in the Emmy Award-winning comedy Modern Family, which features fictional gay couple Mitchell and Cam.

He thinks pop culture's depiction of homosexuals is changing the way a lot of Americans view same-sex couples.

"I have family members that I don't necessarily need to name, that felt one way [about gay rights] five years ago and feel a different way now," Ty revealed to The Hollywood Reporter.

"And I do really think that has something to do -- not just our show, just our general, of seeing, day in and day out, gay people living the same lives as everybody else. And I think that, sort of weirdly enough, that banality, is revolutionary."

Characters Mitch and Cam's familial problems are similar to the straight fictional couples' challenges on the show.

Ty believes such a naturalistic portrayal is what gets people to shift their thinking.

"Just seeing [their characters] Mitch and Cam dealing with the kid trying to sleep, trying to figure out how to dress them for Halloween, fighting about who's the breadwinner," he clarified.

"Everything is, other than a few small things, is essentially the same." (C) Cover Media
