(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Will Ferrell thinks the American political system is "insane".

The Anchorman actor stars in upcoming political comedy Southern Rivals opposite funnyman Zach Galifianakis. The film follows two presidential candidates on a campaign to win the Head of State seat.

Will is aiming to make an impactful social statement with this film.

"[T]he movie is just a platform for us to illustrate how insane our political process has become," Will told Total Film.

"The crazy ad campaigns that exist now and the manipulations. We're going to make it pretty farcical but not really that far from the truth."

Real life politics are incorporated humorously into the plot. Illicit affairs that destroy careers is topic broached in the film.

"We're politically hungry, and I'm cruising along until I leave what I think is a message on my mistress' voicemail but it's really just a random family and it blows up in my face," Will explained.

"I'm seen as vulnerable for the first time and the opposition decides to run a candidate against me and that's Zach's character."

Will has played a former president in Broadway stage play You're Welcome America: A Final Night with George W. Bush.

His character in Southern Rivals has a more broad appeal, representing more than one particular elected official.

"No, no, [the movie is] just kind of based on all the politicians nowadays and how no one really talks about any issues, just pays lip service to a bunch of things," he said.

Southern Rivals is slated for release in August 2012. (C) Cover Media
