Wyclef Jean: Fugees are my family

13th January 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Wyclef Jean admits the Fugees was fraught with egos and differences, but he still considers his bandmates his family.

The Haitian musician formed the group with his friends Pras Michel and Lauryn Hill in the early 90s. They went on to achieve worldwide success with their albums Blunted on Reality and The Score, but there was constant speculation the threesome had a turbulent relationship.

The members all began to pursue solo projects in 1997, although they completed several projects together over the next few years including some reunion shows in 2005.

Since then they have not had much to do with each other, although Wyclef was pleased to hear Lauryn is working on new material. He insists he views his bandmates as siblings, even if they arent as close as they once were.

When it comes to Lauryn and Pras, it's my childhood, they always bring me to that place. Bono's U2 calls The Fugees the hip hop version of the Beatles. It was the first band of hip hop in our generation, he told BBC Newsbeat.

The idea that Lauryn is back on the road and she's working is great. It's a great thing and will spark new ideas for all of us. At the end of the day Pras is my brother and Lauryn is my sister, despite what the media say. You're going to have egos and differences but at the end of the day I love them both very much.

Wyclef and Pres hadnt seen each other for years when they recently bumped into each other on a plane. Wyclef was amazed to see his one-time band member, and admits he didnt know how to react.

I saw Pras on the flight and as a Fugees member I didn't know whether to elbow him, shoot him or give him a kiss and we gave a hug, he laughed. (C) Cover Media
