'Village Rockstars', India's official entry at 2019 Oscars

Nor Deepika Padukone's 'Padmaavat' neither Alia Bhatt starrer 'Raazi' couldn't make it as an official selection at the prestigious Academy Awards. It is Rima Das directorial 'Village Rockstar', set in the backdrop of her home-town Kalardiya village in Assam.

In 2017, the film was also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. Assamese child actor Bhanita Das who is the lead actor in the film, as well as Rima's cousin sister and the little actor, plays a 10-year-old girl named 'Dhunu'.

Bhanita has already bagged the National award for the role. Shot for over a span of 130 days Rima has been one woman army as she is the sole screenwriter, executive producer, editor, production designer and cinematographer in her own film.

The film is India's official selection for Oscars in the Foreign Language Film category. Speaking about the achievement, an elated Rima told a leading daily, "Thank you, thank you, thank you! There isn’t much to say, but this…(And also that) this is probably the day I had been waiting for all my life."

A 12-member jury of the Film Federation of India, led by Kannada producer-director SV Rajendra Singh Babu, selected Village Rockstars as India's official Oscar entry in the category over at least 29 other films, including big-budget Bollywood productions Padmavaat and Raazi, submitted to the jury for consideration. The 91st Academy Awards is scheduled to be held on February 24, 2019.
