(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Arcade Fire and Lady Antebellum were the big winners at last nights Grammy Awards, taking home the key prizes in what was viewed as a major upset.
Canadian band Arcade Fire received the prestigious album of the year prize for their record The Suburbs, beating Lady Gaga, Lady Antebellum, Katy Perry and Eminem. The group were thrilled with the accolade, although singer Win Butler initially looked as if he couldnt believe it.
What the hell," he muttered, before announcing the group would give an unscheduled performance to celebrate. We're going to go play another song, because we like music.
They band then gave a storming rendition of their track Ready to Start after being handed the gong by Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.
Lady Antebellum surprised many by picking up five of the six awards they were nominated for, including record of the year for Need You Now and song of the year for the track of the same name. The group also picked up prizes for the best country album, best country group and best country song for Need You Now.
We just cried our eyes out backstage, member Charles Kelley said after receiving the record of the year prize. I can't believe we're standing up here again.
It had been thought Justin Bieber would be named best new artist, but in another shock the prize went to Esperanza Spalding. I had no clue what was going to happen; I worked really hard these past few years and you know, I'm not going to lie I was disappointed, the 16-year-old star admitted.
Eminem was nominated for ten honours, but went home with just two. He received the best rap album accolade for Recovery and best rap solo for Not Afraid.
OK, this is crazy, he said. Thank you to the fans.
Lady Gaga gave a typically unorthodox performance of her new track Born This Way, arriving on stage in a giant egg. She travelled down the red carpet in the vessel, which was carried by her entourage. As she made it to the stage the 24-year-old hatched from the egg, and then sang and danced in a gold skirt and cropped top.
The flamboyant singer had been up for six prizes, and went home with awards including best female pop vocal for Bad Romance and best pop album for The Fame Monster.
Other winners included Bruno Mars who won best male pop vocal, Muse who picked up accolades including best rock album for The Resistance and Jay-Z and Alicia Keys whose song Empire State of Mind was named best rap song.
