(Cover) - EN Movies - Captain America: The First Avenger has debuted at the top of the US box office, and is likely to be the most successful superhero movie of the summer.
The release boasts Chris Evans as the title character and raked in an estimated $65.8 million this weekend. That puts it ahead of Green Lantern and X Men: First Class, both of which disappointed when they were released. If the figure is correct it will also mean the film narrowly beat Thor, which scooped $65.7 when it opened earlier this year.
Last week's victor Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 dropped to second place, seeing an estimated 72% decline in sales. The picture still brought in around $48.1 million however, and is thought to have taken $1 billion worldwide during its first week of release.
Taking the third spot was Friends with Benefits. The movie stars Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis as friends who decide to have a sexual relationship and raised $18.5 million.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon made $12million and claimed the fourth spot, despite being released several weeks ago. Jennifer Aniston's new comedy Horrible Bosses rounded out the top five with $11.7 million.
Also featuring in the box office top ten this week were Zookeeper, Cars 2, Winnie the Pooh, Bad Teacher and Midnight in Paris. (C) Cover Media
