Cate Blanchett turns a year older..

14th May 2012

With a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, two BAFTAs, and an Academy Award, Cate Blanchett is today called as ‘the new Meryl Streep’ or ‘the Meryl Streep of the next generation’. Wish the talented actress and performer a happy birthday today.

Cate, who was born on 14 May 1969, was awarded Sydney Theatre Critics' Best Newcomer Award for her first ever major stage performance opposite Geoffery Rush. And after appearing in several theatre and Australian television series, she made her first international film debut with the movie Paradise Road in which she had a supporting role. Cate made her lead role debut also in the same year with Oscar and Lucinda opposite Ralph Fiennes.

Her first high-profile international role was as Elizabeth I of England in the 1998 movie Elizabeth, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. But the actress received her highest number of awards for the movie, including the BAFTA for Best Actress in Leading Role and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress-Motion Picture Drama. In 2005 she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for playing Katharine Hepburn in Martin Scorsese's The Aviator.

In early 2009, Blanchett appeared in a series of special edition postage stamps called "Australian Legends of the Screen", featuring Australian actors acknowledged for the "outstanding contribution they have made to Australian entertainment and Culture".
